Blake Shelton croons 20 songs, encore after IndyCar race in Iowa

After a blazing hot weekend of IndyCar racing and a full lineup of concerts, country music superstar Blake Shelton was impressed thousands of fans stayed more than an hour to see him perform in Newton on Sunday.

“I was literally terrified after two days of this, this being the last day, me being the last guy, y’all would be too tired and go home,” Shelton said to an ecstatic crowd.

Creating a weekend jam-packed with concerts, Hy-Vee pulled all the stops, bringing in country star Tim McGraw and country duo Florida Georgia Line to bookend the race on Saturday and on Sunday afternoon, Shelton’s wife, pop sensation and fellow coach on “The Voice” Gwen Stefani, performed a 12-song set of her most well-known tracks.

Wearing jeans and a black, long-sleeved button-up shirt, Shelton walked on-stage to the beat of “Neon Light” Sunday night after the Hy-Vee Salute to Farmers 300 Presented By Google, part of the Hy-Vee IndyCar Race Weekend at the Iowa Speedway.

Shelton introduced himself to the crowd before launching into “All About Tonight,” “Sure Be Cool If You Did” and “Honey Bee,” hitting a total of 20 songs from across his discography plus an encore for the devoted fans.

Before performing “Hell Right”, a fan tossed a corn-on-the-cob plushie onto the stage, startling Shelton, who placed the grinning sweet corn near his drink and slipping into “The More I Drink,” “Sangria,” and “Hillbilly.”

“I just want to paint a picture of what’s happening right now: It’s Sunday evening, the race is over, we’re all still here, on a racetrack surrounded by soybeans. People are throwing corn cob stuffed animals on the stage, blocking the sun with paper plates,” Shelton said. “This is real country. This is beyond redneck, beyond hillbilly.”
