Daredevil’s Vincent D’Onofrio Reacts to Born Again Series Announcement

Vincent D’Onofrio, who portrayed Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in the Netflix original series Marvel’s Daredevil, has reacted to Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ reboot, Daredevil: Born Again.

Following Born Again‘s announcement at Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, D’Onofrio simply tweeted, “When I was a boy…,” a line his character often uttered while recounting his childhood in Netflix’s Daredevil. Several hours later, D’Onofrio made another tweet in which he shared Born Again‘s official logo. “Yes Mr Murdock…,” he wrote. “Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again, an Original series starring Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio, streaming Spring 2024.”

Created by Stan Lee and John Romita Sr., Wilson Fisk/Kingpin first appeared in 1967’s Amazing Spider-Man #50. The character was initially an adversary of Spider-Man, though would later come to be known as Daredevil’s arch-nemesis. D’Onofrio is the third actor to play the character in live-action. John Rhys-Davies played the Kingpin in the 1989 television film The Trial of the Incredible Hulk (which also featured Rex Smith as Matt Murdock/Daredevil), while Michael Clarke Duncan played the role in 2003’s Ben Affleck-led Daredevil film.

If You Want to Be a King for a Day…

D’Onofrio first portrayed Wilson Fisk in the Netflix original series Marvel’s Daredevil, which starred Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and ran for three seasons from 2015 to 2018. D’Onofrio’s Fisk was the main antagonist of Daredevil Season 1. He served as a secondary antagonist in Season 2 before once again becoming the show’s big bad in Season 3. Following Daredevil‘s cancellation in late 2018, the character’s on-screen future was left uncertain.

D’Onofrio finally reprised his role as the Kingpin in Marvel Studios’ late-2021 Disney+ original series Hawkeye, thus confirming the character as Marvel Cinematic Universe canon. In Hawkeye, Kingpin was revealed to be the mysterious “uncle” of Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), aka Echo. Around that same time, Charlie Cox reprised his role as Matt Murdock in the MCU film Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which he served as Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s (Tom Holland) lawyer.

D’Onofrio and Charlie Cox will reportedly reprise their respective roles opposite Alaqua Cox in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ series Echo, a spinoff of Hawkeye, which is slated to premiere in summer 2023 as part of Phase Five of the MCU. Furthermore, a new trailer for Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk: Attorney at Law features a brief cameo by Daredevil, who appears to be wearing a new, Bill Everett-esque suit. (She-Hulk premieres later this year on Aug. 17 as the penultimate entry in Phase Four.) Charlie Cox is also confirmed to be voicing the character of Daredevil in Marvel Studios’ Disney+ animated series Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

Amid all of this, there have been reports of Marvel Studios developing a Daredevil reboot series for Disney+. Studio president Kevin Feige confirmed as much at SDCC, announcing Daredevil: Born Again, which will debut in spring 2024 as part of the latter portion of the MCU’s Phase Five. Charlie Cox and D’Onofrio will both appear in the series, the first season of which will consist of 18 episodes.

The title Born Again not only signifies Daredevil’s return to screens, but also serves as a reference to writer Frank Miller and artist David Mazzucchelli’s 1986 comic book Daredevil: Born Again, often regarded as one of the Man Without Fear’s defining tales. Miller and Mazzucchelli’s Born Again was loosely adapted in the third and final season of Netflix’s Daredevil, which also took inspiration from Kevin Smith, Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti’s Daredevil: Guardian Devil.
